Have you heard of or ever tried Alternate Nostril Breathing or Nadi Shodhana Pranayama in sanskrit?

It’s a yogic style of breath work where you do exactly as the name says, alternative breathing in and out of each nostril. The sanskrit name translates to “subtle energy clearing breathing technique.”

Benefits include:

  • Lowers heart rate
  • Harmonizes the left and right hemispheres of the brain
  • Aids in concentration and focus

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Sit in a comfortable position.
  2. Rest your left palm in your lap, palm open face up.
  3. Close your eyes, take a deep breathe in and out through both nostrils.
  4. Close your right nostril with your right thumb. Inhale through your left nostril slowly and steadily.
  5. Close your left nostril with your right ring finger so both nostrils are closed. Hold your breath for one moment – try to calm your mind.
  6. Open your right nostril and slowly release the breath through only your right nostril. Pause at the bottom of the exhale.
  7. Inhale through your right nostril. Close your right nostril with your right ring finger so both nostrils are closed. Hold your breath for one moment.
  8. Open your left nostril and slowly exhale your air out through only your left side. Pause at the bottom of the exhale.
  9. Repeat 5-10 cycles!
